This I Believe

Welcome to WHUUF Members and Friends' "This I Believe"

What do Unitarians Believe? What do you Believe?

This is a collection of statements of religious and philosophical beliefs of some of the members and friends of The West Hills Unitarian Fellowship in Portland, Oregon.

Two people take about twenty minutes each on a given Sunday, not only to enumerate their beliefs, both religious and other, but also to give a background of how they came by them. A flexible format encourages creativity in presentation. Considering the reluctance of many to be thus self revealing, we have made optional the usual question and answer period -- it's frightening enough to get up in front of everyone and bare our souls without having to defend our beliefs.

When Peter and Kathleen Serrell became members of WHUUF in 1980 they brought this program with them from Southern California.. It has been very popular.

We have in our files many submissions under the title "This I Believe". Members and Friends of WHUUF have sent in Poems, Cards, Pictures, Diagrams, and Essays. One essay is a single paragraph, others are many pages long. But most of all, we have over 200 of these taped presentations (or a typed transcript of them). going back to 1982. All this material will eventually be available on this website.

In 1985, some members assembled about 25 of these presentations into a book. It is planned to select about the same number of more current presentations for another book.

If you have any questions, or if you'd like to participate either by making a Sunday presentation at WHUUF, or sending in your own "This I Believe" written piece, please let us know.

Go to "This I Believe" Index Page

The library of "This I Believe" presentations is gradually being expanded, including both recent and past presentations.  Source presentions and documents for "This I Believe" presentations come in a variety of formats that are stored internally in various ways. The best way to locate a presentation is to check the This I Believe Index Page.

Bob Pearson has put together documents and audio files from several This I Believe Presentations by Peter and Kathleen Serrell, from 1984 to 2002. Some of the presentations are recorded in audio only, some are text only. To see and/or listen to them, go to the Peter and Kathleen Serrell This I Believe Index Page.

Bob has a nice recent picture of Peter that he used, but he would like more (e.g. picture of Kathleen, pictures of Peter/Kathleen at about the times of the presentations). If you have pictures that you think might work, please contact Bob.

I am very interested that over the years my beliefs have changed. Ideas which used to be very important are now seen in a different light and from a changed perspective.
I recall that when I did a "This I Believe" presentation at WHUUF, I made several changes afterwards.

Next spring (2009) I would like to do a Sunday presentation which asks a few of us UU's how specific beliefs (quoted from their old "This I Believe" tapes) have changed, and what might have caused it.
