"A Special Mask Invitational Show"

To conceal, to disguise, to protect, to play, to tell stories...masks have had a role in the history of all cultures. This special invitational show celebrates the drama and whimsy of art that takes on new identities with each owner.

The public is invited to join us on Sunday, April 11th from 12:30 - 2pm for refreshments and to meet and hear stories from the creators of this wonderful art form.

The Doll Gardner Art Gallery's show for March features a 10 year retrospective of paintings and pastels by Deborah DeWit.

DEBORAH DEWIT:
"Books, Cats and the Natural World"

Deborah DeWit is a local photographer, painter and author, who has been full-time artist showing in the Northwest for 30 years. Her photographs have been widely shown since 1980 and she has written about her life as a photographer in Traveling Light: Chasing an Illuminated Life, in 2003 (reissued in 2006.) Her work in pastel is known for its subject matter about books and reading, a collection of which, In the Presence of Books (2007), with an introduction by Kim Stafford. Working mostly in oil the last ten years her subjects have been inspired by her connection with nature and her ideas about how humans perceive the natural world. In her latest book she wrote about her relationships with cats and their wildness in Painting Cats (2008), with an introduction by Marge Piercy. Most recently she collaborated with her filmmaker husband Carl Vandervoort in the making of the documentary Wetlands, the story of her relationship with a very small piece of wild land near her suburban home and the paintings that resulted from that experience.

ART OPENING: Sunday, March 7th from 12:30-2:00pm. A special screening of Wetlands is tentatively planned for March 6 & 7 at the Joy Theater in Tigard.

ZIMBABWE ARTISTS PROJECT

Zimbabwe Artists Project is a nonprofit based in Portland which works exclusively with artists, mostly women, from Weya, a rural area in eastern Zimbabwe. ZAP�s goal is to assist these artists in supporting their families through their own creativity and by building self respect through self-sufficiency. ZAP strives for a genuine partnership with the women of Weya through education, sale of their art in the U.S., and special projects. Through these efforts ZAP is able to help the women afford basic needs as well as providing school fees, medicines, transport, seeds and fertilizer.

Weya artwork explodes with vibrant colors and life. At the same time, in each piece of artwork, the artist tells a story that can be reflective and personal. The embroideries, appliqu�s, board- and fabric paintings are all reasonably priced, allowing more people to contribute toward a better life for the artists and their families. Each piece of artwork sold is accompanied by a short bio and color photograph of the artist, providing a closer link between artist and viewer.

The public is invited to come and learn more about the program and view the art at the show opening, Sunday, February 7th from 12:30-2pm.

The Doll Gardner Art Gallery's show for January is a special presentation by Sisters of the Road Cafe.

PHOTO VOICE

Our gallery is pleased to announce it's collaboration with the Sisters of the Road Cafe. Customers of this non-profit cafe in downtown Portland were given cameras to document their experience of homelessness and poverty living on Portland streets. Executive Director Monica Beemer will give a special presentation at regular services starting at 9:00, and will join us for an Artist's reception from 12:30 to 2 pm. The public is welcome to all activities.

HOLIDAY SHOW

Each year in December the gallery has a special annual buy-and-take show to allow for holiday shopping. This year we are featuring the work of 5 local artists in a show of affordable reproductions. Please join us on Saturday December 5th for a special open house preview of the show. You can meet with the artists, knosh on refreshments and peruse additional works not shown in the gallery. Join us on Sunday 12/6 from 12-2 when we celebrate the artist's work with our regular art opening.

"Moment of Longing"

This exhibition represents an ongoing body of work, mostly imagery from Michael's travels outside the country. He says "I love the sense of dislocation I find in foreign locations, how my awareness is heightened, with visual and emotional connections made in unexpected ways. In these works I am not concerned about the literal description of the scene, but rather a deeper reality, one each viewer can divine for themselves."

"Living Craft: Photos from Japan "

I have long been fascinated by the colors and patterns of agricultural landscape. Within this context, the distinction between nature and human craft becomes ambiguous, questionable, and open to our own perceptions and preconceptions of space. This body of work is my attempt to express the inherent tension between that which is cultivated and that which is wild, set against the backdrop of rural Japanese life.

Synchronicity brought Robin Urton and Amy Livingstone together, leading to an awareness of a shared artistic vision rooted in reverence for the earth. Drawing inspiration from a combination of personal reverie, sacred mythologies, and the world�s spiritual traditions, this exhibit reflects the sensibility of creating art as a sacred act. The intention of the work is to awaken hearts to beauty and the divine presence woven throughout the fabric of everyday life.

A Sense of Place

The exhibit A Sense of Place is a juried group exhibit of the Portland Plein Air & Studio Painters (PPASP). Paintings were completed exclusively with either Plein Air or Alla Prima methods, employing �first hand observation�.

�Plein Air� refers to painting outdoors on location. �Alla Prima�, similarly, describes a painting technique in which a canvas is completed in one sitting. Plein air and Alla Prima artists are considered direct painters and seldom work from photographs. In the Plein Air/Alla Prima tradition, brushstrokes and drawings will have a distinctive loose and flowing style. Our members aspire to fully explore and respond to the beauty that surrounds us all with first hand observation. PPASP has no preference as to style, materials used, or artistic interpretation.

Exhibiting artists include Amanda Houston, Michael Fisher, Brenda Boylan, Celeste Bergin, Joe Howard, Katherine van Schoonhoven and 12 other members of PPASP. .
