I am very interested that over the years my beliefs have changed. Ideas which used to be very important are now seen in a different light and from a changed perspective.
I recall that when I did a "This I Believe" presentation at WHUUF, I made several changes afterwards.
Next spring (2009) I would like to do a Sunday presentation which asks a few of us UU's how specific beliefs (quoted from their old "This I Believe" tapes) have changed, and what might have caused it.
If you have any ideas, comments, or if you'd like to participate, please post a comment here or let me know (pjoyes@gmail.com)
This is one aspect of being a UU that I enjoy - that I could wake up one morning and say "I'm not sure." and I don't want anybody else to tell me, I want to figure it out for myself. I reject any fixed dogma for it seems quite reasonable that the ideas which used to be very important to me are now seen in a different light, and from a different perspective as I grow older. ( I was going to say "as I mature.")
Here are some examples: Over the years I have attempted to understand women, and looking back over the relationships I have had, I notice they are all different. I think understanding relationships is like clarity, it is an elusive, ephemeral flash. Similarly, I started off believing what I was told about the divine, about God, but I have gradually built my own, very personal God, which at each stage has been different. The values and priorities I had when I worked in a large corporation are very different from those I hold now after operating my own business for the past 31 years.
I am suspicious of any dogma which professes to have "The Answers" because If I am honest with myself, I notice so many changes. I am very interested to know how you might have experienced such changes in your beliefs over the years.
"This I used to believe." But my beliefs have changed now.
