"The World of Women" – Honoring the Feminine Women – everyone knows one; wars have been fought over them, brushstrokes have made masterpieces of them, and epic poems have sung their praises. Goddesses, myths, daughters, mothers, celebrities, heroines, songstresses, cowgirls, saints and sinners - women captivate and hold our attention. This month’s show features works that express the feminine form. Please join us for an artists’ reception on Sunday, April 1st from 12:30-2PM in the Sanctuary.
Traditionally associated with Hindu and Buddhist art through the century into our current age, mandala have brought us in touch with ourselves and our place in the world. Tools for healing and meditation, these pieces encourage us to join the cylindrical nature of life. Mandala are all around us: in the center of a sunflower, a bird’s nest, the web of a spider, the cycle of the moon. They are in our buildings and brighten our days. These sacred circles bring us into connection with the wider circle of life, and their beauty and balance shine out from cultures throughout the world like silent prayers. This month’s show features twelve artists who use mandala in a variety of forms. Please join us for an artists’ reception on Sunday, March 4th from 12:30-2pm.

Winter: a time of reflection and contemplation when the earth slows. In ancient times February was a time of uncertainty in the darkness, yet with hope that the light would return again to warm and bring life. It was felt that it was a time when the seeds of hope lay in the earth's womb, waiting to unfurl. Rituals were employed and candles were lit to entreat the sun to return again, and new life was not yet apparent - but was stirring.
In this time of uncertainty for the planet, our communities and our faith congregations -- we all need the hope that change will be for the positive. As we formulate that change, our hearts could all use a little light.
This month the gallery is pleased to bring forth a show that has been 3 years in the making: to showcase artists who gladden our spaces and homes with the gift of light. Artists featured are Wendy Dunder, Stephen White, Lam Quang and Dan Daniels. The public is welcome to join us in celebrating the artists and their work at an opening reception Sunday, Feb. 5th from 12:30 - 2pm. For more information contact the Director at 503/246-3351. JANUARY 2012 - FEED THE HUNGRY A special dialog on Hunger in our communities
The economy. Budget cuts. Layoffs. Foreclosures. Wherever you go, whatever you do, these issues confront us. They leave in their wake people who are hungry, and the number of hungry people has doubled in the past year.
For the month of January each year the Doll Gardner gallery hosts a show of non-profits or causes that express our principle of Social Justice in our congregations and our communities. It is a time that we invite the wider world – our Portland Metro community – into dialog about important issues. This year we are happy to host Loaves and Fishes, Family Bridge, Tualatin Valley Gleaners, Northwest Portland Ministries, The Sunshine Food Pantry, The Oregon Food Bank, Neighborhood House and other non-profits providing food services to the hungry in Washington County and the greater Portland Metro area.
The gallery wishes to thank and celebrate all organizations and the legion of volunteers who collect, grow, store., recover surplus food from local restaurants, grocers, caterers and farmers markets and distribute food to people in need in these difficult economic times. The public is invited to an opening reception Sunday, Jan. 7th from 12:30 – 2pm, 8470 SW Oleson Rd., Portland, Oregon 97223. For information, call 503/246-3351 Ext. 4.
For over 16 thousand years, humans have shaped clay and with the aid of fire, created vessels that remain functional today. Our artists for the month of November have pounded and worked and morphed this ancient art form into works of art that are delicate and profound, earthy and ethereal. Please celebrate with us at the artists’ reception, Sunday November 6th from 12:15-2pm. For images of work in this show, please click on the title above.
Michael DiBitetto
The word "Etching" often brings to mind art from past eras, where crafts were learned over long periods of apprenticeship, often through guilds. Experiencing Michael DiBitetto's work is like cracking open an old familiar book from the past, its aroma of old leather and paper scenting the room. At the same time we can re-experience the landscapes that we've come to rely on as part of our life in Oregon. Please join us for an artist's reception on Sunday, October 2nd from 12:15 - 2pm at the gallery and enjoy Fall harvest refreshments.

For the month of September, the Doll Gardner Gallery is hosting "Bridgetown - life on the River." Portland received this nickname for our many bridges, some of them fascinating engineering marvels. The waters of the Willamette and the Columbia pulse life giving water through and around our boundaries, bringing with them abundant wildlife and recreational opportunities. Come and celebrate the work of local artists using various media to express their love of this special place we call home.
The public is welcome to an art opening: 12:30-2pm, Sunday, September 11th.

Members of the Paint-Out Group, a fellowship of local landscape artists, present “A Collection of Views” a new exhibit depicting Northwest scenes. A majority of the paintings have been created “en plein air”, a French term denoting the work was painted on site, in the open air. The exhibit contains works in watercolors, oils, pastels, and acrylics and celebrates unique aspects of our landscape as seen through the eyes of the artists.
Artists: Mary McCoy, Allen Greene, Jeanne Cuddeford, Nathalie Equall, Gretha Lindwood, Bev Drew Kindley, George Schweser and Mary Luzinski.

Unlike other media, the art of colored pencil is still in its infancy, and has only recently found its way into galleries, museums, and international exhibitions.
As colored pencils are translucent, you see as many as 10 layers of color in a piece, creating rich, complex hues. This month’s show will feature 5 artists from the Portland District Chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America: Pat Averill, Julie Fulkerson, Pat Jackman, CJ Worlein, and Sidne Zenner.
Please join us for an Artist’s reception Sunday, May 1 from 12:30 – 2:00 pm.
The show will run from May 1- June 3, 2011

Andrea McFarland
Emerging Portland artist Andrea McFarland uses dry pastel landscapes to convey the generosity of nature and the unique qualities of contrasting light, weather, and wildness that make Oregon a place to treasure. Her subtly glowing scenes bring the viewer in touch with a sense of quiet, spaciousness and peaceful solitude.
